Hollow Ponds

Frozen forest

The cold snap is coming to an end, with luck for the rest of winter, but for anyone who likes photos to remember the snow here are some of Hollow Ponds/Epping Forest in Leytonstone (though also known as Leyton Flats and Whipps Cross!).

A sign usefully reminds people that barbecues aren’t allowed, even though by British standards it seems perfectly acceptable barbecue weather. Hollow Ponds look like ice rinks but on a serious note they should not be used for skating, the ice is really dangerous and melting.

Former Leytonstone head made a Dame in New Year’s Honours

A former Leytonstone School headteacher has been made a Dame in the New Year’s Honours List.

Joan McVittie, now Dame Joan McVittie, has been recognised for improving Leytonstone School, and then Woodside High, in Tottenham.

Full story: BBC

Profile of Dame Joan McVittie

Joan McVittie is the highly-regarded Headteacher of Woodside High School in a deprived area of Haringey. She took the school from the brink of closure to achievement of an “outstanding” grading in the 2011 Ofsted inspection. Nationally, she has contributed to the wider school community through her participation in the Secondary Headteachers Forum, as President of the Association of School and College Leaders and as a governor of the National College.

Christmas cards, music and recipes for you to enjoy

Christmas Card 8 frontIf you were waiting to see if the world was going to end this morning before sending your Christmas cards, well the good news is the Mayan’s got it wrong and we’re all still here, the not so good news is you’ve left it too late to post a card, except by Special Delivery (check Royal Mail’s Christmas posting dates here).

Help is at hand. I’ve added some (free) Leytonstone Christmas cards you can download and email or print off yourself. Plus a page of Christmas and New Year music, including Carols, other songs and Auld Lang Syne (including the words).

Don’t forget also there’s a page on Christmas and New year events in Leytonstone (recently updated) and Christmas shopping ideas and I’ve added a page with some links to Christmas recipes.

Whether you celebrate Christmas or try to avoid it, best wishes for the season and for 2013. I hope you find this site useful and will share it with colleagues, friends and family.

Do you live on a bomb site?

Bomb Sight screenshotHave you ever wondered why the house next door is such a different style? Or why houses in your street have tie bars to hold them together? It may just be they were bombed in the war!

History students and buffs, estate agents and property hunters alike might well find this new website fascinating, which shows the location of bombs in London during the Blitz (7 October 1940 to 6 June 1941) in World War II.

Leytonstone, like much of London and especially East London, suffered more than its fair share of bombing. See if your house or road was affected!
